Seasoning through the centuries

Reading time:4 mins

Here at how2behuman we have been packing, preparing and smelling our way towards adding exquisite Turkish seasoning to our distribution network. The process got us thinking about food seasoning more generally and the tremendous difference it makes to dishes across the world. A basic commodity such as lemon juice can excite the palette. Dare it be mentioned, even British food has grown over the years through the introduction and normalization of aromatic spices and earthy herbs.

That meals can be transformed so effectively causes one to dwell on how seasoning has developed over time. From foraging and hunter-gathering to feudal struggles toward delicious, juicy bursting Turkish meats, the historical journey of seasoning through the centuries is surely incredible. The timeline below is a window into a wider, tastier adventure:

Ø  1500- 1000 BCE: Arabian and Indus Valley populations grew and harvested cinnamon.

Ø  27 BC – 476 AD: Demand for spices increased across the Roman Empire, as feasting and ‘luxury dining’ grew.

Ø  1200 – 1400 AD: In the Middle Period, trade routes such as the Silk Road connect East and West, leading to growth in trade of spices such as cumin, paprika and turmeric.

During the Silk Road's heyday, Trans-Saharan trade routes played a vital role in connecting North Africa with Sub-Saharan Africa, including the transportation and trade of spices such as cardamom, coriander, ginger and citrus.

Ø  16th Century onwards: The age of exploration sees European nations dictate the spice trade, and fine dining develops for nobility and upper classes.

Ø  19th century onwards, attention turns to easier, more convenient meals or even canned goods, in light of the great depression and two World Wars. Spices and preservatives are used together.

Ø  Today. The array of spices, herbs and seasonings used are endless, ranging from 5-star Michelin restaurants to fried chicken, all of which require multiple seasonings and blends.

Now that you have considered it more thoughtfully, know that you are part of this journey every day, and you can add to it soon, by purchasing delicious Turkish seasoning right here at how2behuman.
