Uncertainty Ascends

Reading time: 4 minutes

“The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” – Oscar Wilde

In case you have missed it, news has recently broken regarding how the BBC doctored Donald Trump’s speech at the time of the Capitol Hill riots. The BBC Panorama documentary entitled Trump: A Second Chance? documentary which aired last year was found to be deliberately misleading, to which the BBC themselves have admitted. You can judge this for yourself:

The BBC made it appear that Trump told supporters he was going to ‘walk’ to the US Capitol with them to “fight like hell”.

In fact, he said he would accompany them “to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard”.

The “fight like hell” comment came 50 minutes later in the speech, but the Panorama documentary put the clips together in a way that was misleading.[1]

Some people like Trump as the POTUS, and some do not. That is essentially irrelevant. What is on the table now for all to see is that a global, state-backed broadcasting corporation has been caught red-handed in an act of deception and manipulation. This is even more disingenuous when considering the likelihood that the BBC knew all along the criticism often aimed at Trump. For an organisation which is supposed to be strive for balance, they had no problem deceptively pouring fuel onto the fire.

It is not the place of this article to politically endorse anyone, or even in that sense to ask political questions. What seems to be abundantly clear though, without the need for political discourse, is that the world in which we live is becoming increasingly uncertain, and all manner of outlets are peddling in deception.

As for many of us Britons who grew up watching the BBC and recognising it as a window to the world, this current circumstance is a harrowing reminder that we live in a time when uncertainty reigns, and that we must tread carefully.
